A Storm in the Rocky Mountains, Mt. Rosalie

Albert Bierstadt

Oil on canvas

Brooklyn Museum

This monumental oil painting depicts a sublime and dramatic confrontation between nature's forces over the Rocky Mountains: a thunderstorm churns above jagged snow-capped peaks while Native American figures hunt deer in the sunlit foreground valley, with a distant encampment nestled beside a winding stream. Bierstadt, a German-American master of the Hudson River School and Rocky Mountain School, composed this vast canvas as a carefully crafted composite of sketches gathered during his 1863 western expedition, intentionally exaggerating the scale of the mountains to heighten the sense of awe. Born in Germany and raised in Massachusetts, Bierstadt trained in Düsseldorf and became the foremost painter of the American West, captivating Eastern audiences with landscapes of breathtaking grandeur and romantic luminism. This nearly 12-foot-wide masterwork is considered one of his greatest achievements and remains a towering icon of 19th-century American landscape painting, now housed in the Brooklyn Museum.
