This intimate winter scene captures the serene beauty of a snow-covered landscape, showcasing the luminous qualities for which Susie M. Barstow was celebrated. As a prominent member of the Hudson River School—America's first independent artistic movement—Barstow was an adventurous spirit who hiked as many as 25 miles a day through mountains to capture nature in situ, often sketching during snowstorms. Though nationally renowned and commercially successful during her lifetime, she was largely forgotten by art history until recent scholarship rediscovered her remarkable six-decade career and her significant contributions as one of the founding mothers of American landscape painting.
