Interior at Nice - Henri Matisse (ca. 1919–1920)

Henri Matisse

Oil on canvas

Art Institute of Chicago

Interior at Nice depicts a sunlit hotel room in Nice, France, viewed from a dramatically elevated perspective: patterned wallpaper and a pink-tiled floor recede toward an open French window where Matisse's favored model, Antoinette Arnoux, is seated on the balcony against a glimpse of the Mediterranean. The composition is unified by the interplay of decorative pattern, modulated light, and the threshold between intimate interior space and open exterior — a balance that Matisse pursued throughout his celebrated Nice period. Henri Matisse (1869–1954), the pivotal French painter and leader of the Fauvist movement, began wintering in Nice from 1917 onward, finding in the Mediterranean light and the ornate Rococo hotel rooms an inexhaustible source of warmth, color, and sensory richness. This painting is among the most ambitious works from that sustained body of hotel-room interiors, integrating decorative pattern, compressed perspective, and luminous color into a composition of quiet but intellectually rigorous complexity.
