Study for a Composition

Piet Mondrian

Charcoal on paper

Community

This work on paper is one of several preparatory studies Mondrian made as he refined his mature Neoplastic compositions. Mondrian labored intensively over the placement, spacing, and density of lines and color fields, producing charcoal and mixed-media sketches both on paper and directly on canvas as part of his rigorous working process. Born in the Netherlands in 1872, Mondrian evolved from naturalistic landscape painting through a Cubist phase into the pure abstraction he called Neoplasticism, co-founding the influential De Stijl movement with Theo van Doesburg. Such studies illuminate the deliberate, methodical discipline behind compositions that appear deceptively simple, revealing the artist's sustained investigation of balance, line, and primary color.
