Woman with a Cat (c. 1875) depicts a young woman shown from about the waist up, seated in a burgundy-red armchair and tenderly cradling a brown and black striped cat whose head rests against her cheek. Rendered in Renoir's characteristic Impressionist technique of blended, feathery brushstrokes, the composition achieves a luminous softness, with the white and blue tones of the woman's dress set against a seafoam green wall and the edge of a yellow floral curtain. Renoir, born in Limoges in 1841, was a central figure of French Impressionism, celebrated above all for his intimate, warmly lit portrayals of figures in domestic and leisure settings. This small-scale, tender work exemplifies the intimacy and sensory richness that define his figurative output of the 1870s.
