Boulevard Montmartre Winter Morning
Camille Pissarro
Oil on canvas
Metropolitan Museum of Art
Painted in early 1897, this oil on canvas captures Paris's Boulevard Montmartre on a hazy winter morning, suffused with pearly diffused light, fog, and traces of snow. Pissarro observed the scene from an elevated vantage point in his room at the Grand Hôtel de Russie, giving the composition a commanding bird's-eye perspective down the tree-lined thoroughfare, animated by sketchily rendered carriages and pedestrians. The brushwork is characteristically Impressionist — rapid, visible strokes that evoke movement and atmosphere — while passages of broader pointillism on the road surface reflect Pissarro's earlier experimentation with Neo-Impressionist technique. The painting belongs to a celebrated series of fourteen canvases in which Pissarro systematically recorded the boulevard under varying conditions of weather, season, and time of day, making it one of the most disciplined serial projects in Impressionist art.
