Bathsheba Receiving David's Letter - After Rembrandt / School of Govert Flinck (c. 1645)

After Rembrandt / Govert Flinck (attributed)

Oil on panel

Metropolitan Museum of Art

This intimate Old Testament scene depicts Bathsheba in a moment of profound moral contemplation as she receives King David's fateful letter summoning her. Created in the manner of Rembrandt by one of his accomplished followers, possibly Govert Flinck, the work showcases the warm golden tones, dramatic chiaroscuro, and emotional depth characteristic of the Dutch Golden Age master's studio. Flinck studied under Rembrandt from about 1633-1636 and became so proficient at imitating his master's style that many of his early works were mistaken for genuine Rembrandts and sold as such—making this painting a fascinating example of the artistic tradition passed from teacher to student during one of history's most celebrated periods in painting.
