High Street, Oxford - J.M.W. Turner (1810)

Joseph Mallord William Turner

Oil on canvas

Ashmolean Museum

This luminous oil painting captures the bustling life of Oxford's famous High Street, looking westward with University College on the left and All Souls College on the right, set against the spires of Oxford's historic churches. J.M.W. Turner, widely acknowledged as one of the greatest landscape artists of all time, painted this masterwork during the winter of 1809-10, drawing on his deep familiarity with Oxford since childhood visits to relatives nearby. The painting represents Turner's only completed oil street scene and displays his exceptional architectural draftsmanship alongside his mastery of light and atmosphere. Now permanently housed in the Ashmolean Museum, this work brings the timeless elegance of early 19th-century Oxford into any space with its golden tones and meticulous detail.
