Pink Bouquet

Pierre Bonnard

Oil on canvas

Musée d'Orsay

Pink Bouquet is an intimate still-life painting depicting a bouquet of pink flowers arranged in a yellow pot, set against a vibrant, multi-coloured background — a subject wholly characteristic of Bonnard's mature output. Pierre Bonnard, born in Fontenay-aux-Roses in 1867, was a founding member of the Post-Impressionist group Les Nabis and is widely regarded as one of the greatest colourists of modern art, celebrated for his bold, expressive use of colour and his stylized decorative sensibility. By the time of this work's creation around 1930, Bonnard had long settled into the luminous domestic world of his later career, producing still lifes, interiors, and garden scenes in which colour — built through areas of small, close-valued brush marks — functioned as the primary expressive vehicle. The painting exemplifies his lifelong practice of rendering humble, everyday subjects with chromatic intensity and compositional sophistication, a hallmark of what critics have termed his Intimist vision.
