Morning in a Pine Forest (Russian: Утро в сосновом лесу) is a monumental oil painting depicting a misty, densely wooded pine forest at dawn, with four bear cubs frolicking on and around a fallen tree in the foreground. The landscape—towering pines shrouded in soft morning haze, light filtering through the canopy—was painted by Ivan Shishkin, while his fellow Peredvizhniki artist Konstantin Savitsky contributed the bear figures. Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin (1832–1898), a founding member of the Peredvizhniki movement and professor at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, was celebrated across Russia for his meticulous, analytically grounded depictions of forest landscapes. The painting was acquired by collector Pavel Tretyakov and has remained one of the most beloved and widely recognized works in the canon of 19th-century Russian art.
