Der Apfelbaum I (Apple Tree I)

Gustav Klimt

Oil on canvas

Private Collection

Der Apfelbaum I (Apple Tree I) is an oil on canvas painted by Gustav Klimt in 1912, depicting a single apple tree set within a lush, flowering meadow rendered in Klimt's characteristic mosaic-like brushwork. The composition fills the square canvas with dense, patterned foliage and blossoms, creating multiple overlapping planes of depth while simultaneously flattening space into a richly decorative surface. Klimt, the founding president of the Vienna Secession and a defining figure of Art Nouveau in Austria, produced his landscapes as a counterpart to his celebrated figurative work, painting them directly from nature during his summer sojourns in the Austrian countryside. The apple tree series exemplifies the mature phase of his landscape practice, in which organic vitality and ornamental abstraction are held in precise equilibrium.
