The Valley of the Nervia is an oil on canvas landscape painted by Claude Monet in 1884, depicting the Nervia river valley on the Italian Riviera near the French-Italian border. The composition is organized into three horizontal bands: snow-capped Maritime Alps in the upper register, green foothills in the middle, and a warm beige foreground in which the village of Camporosso nestles on the banks of the River Nervia. Monet employed the light, bright palette he had developed through his Riviera travels, applying characteristic Impressionist brushwork to capture the transient effects of Mediterranean light across the landscape. As a foundational figure of French Impressionism, Monet brought to this Italian subject the same attentiveness to atmosphere and color that defined his mature practice, producing a work that stands as one of the most luminous examples of his landscape output from the 1880s.
