La Maja Vestida (The Clothed Maja)

Francisco Goya

Oil on canvas

Museo Nacional del Prado

La Maja Vestida (The Clothed Maja) is an oil painting on canvas by the Spanish Romantic painter Francisco Goya, created between approximately 1800 and 1807. It depicts a young woman reclining on a chaise longue adorned with cushions, dressed in a white lace gown, a mustard-yellow jacket, and gold-pointed shoes — the fashionable attire of a maja, a type associated with Madrid's working-class popular culture. The figure meets the viewer's gaze directly and without reserve, an assertive quality that distinguishes both this work and its pendant, La Maja Desnuda (The Nude Maja), from conventional academic portraiture of the era. Conceived as a companion piece to the nude version and likely held in the private collection of Prime Minister Manuel de Godoy, the painting has been housed at the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid since 1901, where it is displayed alongside its celebrated counterpart.
