Bouquet of Sunflowers - Claude Monet (1881)

Claude Monet, high resolution famous painting

Oil on canvas

Metropolitan Museum of Art

Painted in 1881 during Monet's residence at Vétheuil, this luminous still life depicts a generous arrangement of sunflowers—drawn from the artist's own garden—displayed in a white vase with blue detailing, set upon a richly colored tablecloth. Monet renders the blooms with characteristic Impressionist brushwork: bold, visible strokes of intense yellow and orange that convey the vitality and warmth of the flowers rather than precise botanical detail, set against a swirling background of blues, violets, and pinks. As one of approximately twenty floral still lifes Monet produced between 1878 and 1883, the work demonstrates his mastery of color relationships and his ability to transform a traditional genre subject into a vehicle for capturing transient light and sensation. Exhibited at the seventh Impressionist exhibition in 1882, where critics praised its technique, the painting attracted admiration from fellow artists including Vincent van Gogh, and has been held in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art since 1929.
