The Rope Dancer
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
Pastel on paper
Nationalmuseum, Stockholm
The Rope Dancer (French: La danseuse de corde, or funambule) is a pastel on paper by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, created in 1899 and held in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm. The work depicts a female tightrope walker in performance, rendered in Toulouse-Lautrec's characteristic Post-Impressionist style with fluid line and expressive use of color. It belongs to a celebrated series of circus scenes that the artist produced from memory during his confinement at a psychiatric clinic in Neuilly-sur-Seine, where he had been admitted following a health crisis. Unlike many of his earlier works, which capture fleeting impressions of Parisian nightlife, this piece displays a more deliberate and composed pictorial structure, reflecting the concentrated conditions under which it was made.
