Moulin Rouge: La Goulue

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Color lithograph on wove paper

Philadelphia Museum of Art

Moulin Rouge: La Goulue is Toulouse-Lautrec's landmark color lithograph created in 1891 to advertise the celebrated Parisian dance hall, depicting the cancan dancer La Goulue (Louise Weber) performing with her elongated partner Valentin le Désossé before a crowd reduced to stark silhouettes. The composition employs bold flat color, strong outlines, and a Japanese woodblock-inspired aesthetic, marking a decisive break from conventional poster design of the era. Toulouse-Lautrec, a Post-Impressionist painter and printmaker born into French aristocracy in 1864, had immersed himself in the bohemian nightlife of Montmartre, making its performers and venues the central subjects of his art. This poster instantly catapulted him to fame and remains one of the most recognized works in the history of graphic art.
