Road with Cypress and Star

Vincent van Gogh

Oil on canvas

Kröller-Müller Museum

Road with Cypress and Star, also known as Country Road in Provence by Night, is an oil-on-canvas painting completed by Vincent van Gogh in May 1890 during his voluntary confinement at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France. The composition depicts a nocturnal Provençal landscape dominated by a towering cypress tree rendered in swirling dark brushstrokes, set against a luminous night sky containing a crescent moon and a bright star, with a winding road flanked by reeds and small human figures in the middle distance. Van Gogh, a Dutch Post-Impressionist whose bold colour and expressive impasto technique profoundly influenced modern art, infused the scene with characteristic rhythmic energy and emotional intensity. The painting stands as one of the most celebrated works from his Saint-Rémy period and is now a centrepiece of the Kröller-Müller Museum's renowned van Gogh collection in Otterlo, Netherlands.
