Painted during the summer of 1880, this work depicts the Île aux Fleurs, a small island in the Seine River near the village of Vétheuil, northwest of Paris, where Monet lived from 1878 to 1881. The composition is animated by rapid, flickering brushstrokes that render wildflowers, reeds, and riverine vegetation with an emphasis on surface pattern over spatial illusion — a hallmark of Monet's evolving Impressionist technique. Monet was among the founding figures of French Impressionism, dedicated to capturing transient effects of light and atmosphere through direct observation of the natural world. This painting belongs to a remarkably prolific period at Vétheuil during which Monet produced a diverse and sustained body of landscape work along the Seine.
