Gardanne

Paul Cézanne

Oil on canvas

Metropolitan Museum of Art

Cézanne transforms the hilltop town of Gardanne into a cascade of geometric facades, red-tiled roofs, and a central church tower rising against a sky brushed in restless strokes of blue and sage. Working methodically from a fixed vantage point near his home in Provence, he reduces the architecture to interlocking planes of color, foreshadowing the Cubist revolution that would follow a generation later. This is the painter at his most structurally ambitious, treating a sleepy village as a study in balance, depth, and faceted form. A quietly monumental landscape, it brings the golden light and solid geometry of southern France into any room.
