School Time
Winslow Homer
Oil on canvas
National Gallery of Art
School Time depicts a sunlit outdoor scene before a small, boxy red schoolhouse, where a teacher in a long black dress and white hat stands among a dozen children of varying ages grouped on the packed dirt in front of the building. One child paints the initials "WH" in white on the red clapboard wall, a subtle and characteristic self-reference by the artist. Painted in oil on canvas, the work exemplifies Homer's American Realist style of the 1870s — warm, naturalistic light, earthy tonal palette, and closely observed rural figures rendered without sentimentality. The painting belongs to a series of school-subject works Homer produced between 1871 and 1874, which art historians have interpreted as reflections on post–Civil War American life, childhood, and the expanding role of women as teachers in rural communities.
