Offering the Panal to the Bullfighter
Mary Cassatt
Oil on canvas
Clark Art Institute
Painted during an extended stay in Seville in 1873, this oil on canvas depicts a young woman flirtatiously offering a glass of water to a bullfighter, who dips panal—Spanish honeycomb—into it to make a refreshing drink. The composition reflects Cassatt's deep engagement with Spanish Old Master painting, particularly the influence of Velázquez, whose bravura brushwork and rich, dark palette she had been studying firsthand at the Prado. An American artist working in Europe at a formative stage of her career, Cassatt rendered the ornate textures of lace, embroidery, and silk with confident, vibrant brushwork that signals her ambition beyond academic convention. First exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1873 as Offrant le panal au torero and later that same year in Cincinnati, the work stands as one of the most accomplished paintings from her Spanish period and an important precursor to her mature Impressionist practice.
