Sunset on the Sea
John Frederick Kensett
Oil on canvas
Metropolitan Museum of Art
Sunset on the Sea is a luminous oil painting in which Kensett eliminates all evidence of land, presenting an open expanse of calm ocean beneath a radiant setting sun — pure water and sky with no compositional distraction. It belongs to a celebrated group of late works known as "The Last Summer's Work," found in the artist's studio at Darien, Connecticut, after his death in December 1872 and donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art by his brother Thomas in 1874. Kensett, a leading figure of American Luminism and a second-generation Hudson River School master, built his mature style around nearly invisible brushwork, restrained palettes, and an almost meditative rendering of atmospheric light. In this final canvas he pushed that vision to its extreme, achieving a composition of radical simplicity that contemporaries immediately recognized as the purest expression of his lifelong artistic aims.
