Four Figures

Adolphe Monticelli

Oil on panel

Metropolitan Museum of Art

Four richly costumed figures emerge from a dark, atmospheric void, rendered in thick, jewel-toned impasto that seems to glow from within. Monticelli builds form almost sculpturally with his palette knife and loaded brush, layering ochres, mossy greens, and deep russets until the paint itself becomes texture and light. This small, jewel-like panel reflects his romantic, theatrical style that would later captivate Van Gogh, who admired and emulated Monticelli's color and bravura brushwork. A moody, luminous piece, it rewards close viewing with its sheer physicality of paint.
