Wreckers — Coast of Northumberland, with a Steam-Boat Assisting a Ship off Shore

J. M. W. Turner

Oil on canvas

Yale Center for British Art

Exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1834, J. M. W. Turner's Wreckers — Coast of Northumberland, with a Steam-Boat Assisting a Ship off Shore depicts a masted vessel foundering in a storm off the rugged Northumberland coast while a steamship attempts a rescue, and figures on the shore — the "wreckers" of the title — gather to scavenge whatever cargo the sea may deliver. The ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle loom in the background, their medieval endurance forming a haunting contrast with the fragility of human life below. Turner renders the scene in a restrained palette of warm ochres, cool blues, and grays, a tension that amplifies the drama of the subject. The work exemplifies Turner's lifelong preoccupation with the conflict between human endeavor and the overwhelming forces of nature, and anticipates the more radically dissolved seascapes of his later career.
