The Sea at Saint-Palais

Armand Guillaumin

Oil on canvas

Community

This vibrant seascape captures the rugged Atlantic coastline of Saint-Palais-sur-Mer in southwestern France, painted with the bold, intense colors that made Guillaumin one of the most daring colorists among the Impressionists. Armand Guillaumin was a founding member of the Impressionist movement who maintained lifelong friendships with Cézanne and Pissarro, and whose studio became a meeting place for Van Gogh, Gauguin, Signac, and Seurat in the 1880s. The painting showcases Guillaumin's signature thick brushstrokes and confident handling of color, with dramatic coastal rocks set against turbulent sea and sky, exemplifying why critic Félix Fénéon called him a "furious colourist."
