Woman Holding a Balance - Johannes Vermeer (ca. 1664)

Johannes Vermeer

Oil on canvas

National Gallery of Art

In this intimate domestic interior, a young woman dressed in a blue fur-trimmed jacket stands serenely at a table, delicately holding an empty balance scale in her right hand while pearls and gold lie before her on the table's surface. Vermeer, born in Delft in 1632 and a master of the Dutch Golden Age, suffuses the scene with soft, diffused light entering from a curtained window at the left, rendered with his characteristic precision and luminous calm. On the rear wall hangs a painting of the Last Judgment, positioning the woman's quiet act of weighing in deliberate tension with themes of divine justice and moral reckoning. The work has been interpreted variously as a vanitas allegory, a meditation on temperance, and a reflection on the balance between earthly possessions and spiritual values, making it one of the most symbolically rich and debated canvases in Vermeer's small but celebrated oeuvre.
