Dedham Lock and Mill

John Constable

Oil on canvas

Victoria and Albert Museum

Dedham Lock and Mill depicts a serene pastoral scene along the River Stour at Dedham, on the Essex-Suffolk border, an area so intimately associated with the artist that it is today known as 'Constable Country.' The composition centres on the watermill — owned by Constable's father — with the lock gate and sluice in the foreground, tow horses resting on the bank, and the tower of St Mary's Church visible in the distance. John Constable (1776–1837), one of England's foremost Romantic landscape painters, brought to this subject his characteristic naturalism: a luminous, dramatically shifting sky, varied greens, and an attentive rendering of working rural life. The painting stands as one of several versions Constable made of this composition, reflecting both his deep emotional attachment to the landscape of his childhood and his practice of working through subjects across multiple canvases and oil sketches.
