Study - Eugène Delacroix (date unknown)

Eugène Delacroix

Louvre Museum

This work belongs to the rich tradition of preparatory and independent studies that formed the backbone of Eugène Delacroix's artistic practice. Throughout his career, Delacroix was a prolific draftsman known for a style of drawing that favored energy, approximation, and expressive gesture over careful precision, using studies to explore figure, form, and composition in advance of his major canvases. Born in 1798 near Paris, Delacroix became the acknowledged leader of French Romantic painting, championing color, movement, and emotional intensity in contrast to the Neoclassical ideals of his rival Ingres. His drawings—ranging from anatomical studies and copies after Old Masters to rapid sketches of animals and figures—remained largely unknown to the public during his lifetime but have since been widely recognized as providing incomparable insight into his creative process.
