Hydrangea and Swallow, from an Untitled Series of Large Flowers - Katsushika Hokusai (c. 1833/34)

Katsushika Hokusai

Color woodblock print; oban

Art Institute of Chicago

This color woodblock print depicts a swallow in graceful mid-flight alongside a cluster of blooming hydrangeas, rendered against a luminous yellow background. Belonging to Hokusai's celebrated but untitled series of large flowers, this oban-format kacho-e (bird-and-flower print) exemplifies the artist's mastery of bold composition and delicate chromatic nuance in his later career. Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849), one of the foremost masters of the ukiyo-e tradition, worked prolifically across landscape, figure, and nature subjects throughout the Edo period, producing this series during his seventies at the height of his technical powers. The pairing of the hydrangea and swallow carries traditional symbolic resonance in Japanese visual culture, evoking themes of seasonal transition and natural harmony.
