The Wounded Foot

Joaquín Sorolla

Oil on canvas

Museo Sorolla

Painted on the beach at Valencia in 1909, The Wounded Foot depicts two children on the wet sand: one sits examining her injured foot while her companion crouches nearby, peering from beneath a wide-brimmed hat. Sorolla worked outdoors in the manner of the Impressionists, capturing the fleeting effects of late afternoon light as it scatters and glistens across the damp sand, swirling water, and foamy wave edges. The composition's casual, snapshot-like cropping—cutting off the arm of one child at the canvas edge—creates a sense of unscripted immediacy, drawing the viewer into an unplanned moment of childhood vulnerability. Born in Valencia in 1863, Sorolla was celebrated throughout Europe and the United States as a supreme master of light, color, and the Mediterranean coastal scene.
