Bildnis Sonja Knips (Portrait of Sonja Knips) - Gustav Klimt (1897/1898)

Gustav Klimt

Oil on canvas

Österreichische Galerie Belvedere

Bildnis Sonja Knips (Portrait of Sonja Knips) depicts Sonja Knips — born Sophie Amalia Maria Freifrau Potier des Echelles — seated in a flowing pink gown against a dark background, with a bouquet of lilies rising above her head and a small red-leather-bound sketchbook held in her right hand. Klimt renders her with a characteristic blend of precise facial modeling and softly dissolved contours, giving the composition a dreamy, pastel-like atmosphere that signals a decisive departure from his earlier academic style. Gustav Klimt (1862–1918), the preeminent Austrian Symbolist and co-founder of the Vienna Secession, painted this portrait at the threshold of his mature period, displaying influences comparable to the tonal portraiture of James McNeill Whistler. First exhibited at the second Vienna Secession exhibition in 1898, the work stands as a landmark in Austrian modernism and the Art Nouveau movement.
