Dining Room in the Country

Pierre Bonnard

Oil on canvas

Minneapolis Institute of Art

Dining Room in the Country is an oil-on-canvas painting by the French artist Pierre Bonnard, depicting the interior of his country house at Vernonnet on the Seine, which he purchased in 1912 and called "Ma Roulotte" (My Caravan). The composition presents a large table in the foreground draped with a white cloth, cats resting on chairs, and Marthe de Méligny, the artist's companion and later wife, leaning against a windowsill, while open doors and windows dissolve the boundary between the domestic interior and the lush garden beyond. Bonnard, a founding member of the Post-Impressionist group Les Nabis and a leading practitioner of Intimism, employed vibrant, expressive color and loose, assured brushwork to unify interior and exterior space in a single luminous field. The work stands as a consummate example of Bonnard's mature style, in which autobiographical subject matter, bold chromatic harmony, and the poetry of everyday domestic life are fused into a richly sensory whole.
