The Peasant Dance (Kermesse)

Pieter Bruegel the Elder

Oil on oak panel

Kunsthistorisches Museum

The Peasant Dance, also known by its Dutch title De dorpskermis ("The Village Fair"), depicts the opening dance of a Flemish village kermesse — a traditional outdoor festival tied to a patron saint's feast day. Peasants dance, drink, and carouse outside a rural tavern, with a bagpiper providing music and a red banner indicating the feast of Saint George. Pieter Bruegel the Elder, the preeminent Netherlandish genre painter of the sixteenth century, rendered his figures with monumental, Italianate physicality, embedding vivid social observation and probable moral commentary within the festive scene. The work is among the finest examples of Bruegel's late style and stands as a landmark in the history of European genre painting.
