Sunset at Sea - John Singer Sargent (ca. 1905–1906)

John Singer Sargent

Watercolor and gouache on white wove paper

Brooklyn Museum

Sunset at Sea is a luminous watercolor by John Singer Sargent depicting the sea bathed in the warm, atmospheric light of a setting sun. Executed in watercolor and gouache on white wove paper, the work exemplifies Sargent's mastery of the medium—his ability to capture fleeting effects of light and atmosphere with fluid, confident brushwork. Sargent (1856–1925), an American expatriate born in Florence and based primarily in London, turned increasingly to watercolor after approximately 1905, when he curtailed portrait commissions in favor of travel and personal artistic exploration. This intimate marine subject reflects both his lifelong affinity for the sea and the spontaneous, experimental quality that defines his finest works on paper.
