Mistress and Maid

Johannes Vermeer

Oil on canvas

The Frick Collection

Mistress and Maid depicts a pivotal domestic moment: a seated mistress, dressed in a luminous fur-trimmed yellow jacket and pearl jewelry, raises her hand to her chin in a gesture of surprise as her plainly attired maid delivers a letter. Vermeer set the two large-scale figures against a dark background, concentrating the viewer's attention on the charged exchange between the women and the enigmatic letter. A Dutch Golden Age master born in Delft in 1632, Vermeer was renowned for his intimate interior scenes suffused with carefully observed natural light; here he employs his characteristic palette of yellow and blue alongside bravura brushwork to convey both material luxury and psychological tension. The painting is considered one of the supreme examples of Vermeer's late career and stands as a landmark in the Dutch genre tradition of depicting the relationship between mistresses and their maids.
