Staffa, Fingal's Cave
J. M. W. Turner
Oil on canvas
Yale Center for British Art
Painted by Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851) following his 1831 voyage to the Hebridean island of Staffa off the west coast of Scotland, this oil on canvas depicts a steamship battling turbulent seas near the dramatic basaltic cliffs of Fingal's Cave, set against a stormy, luminous sky. Turner juxtaposes the ancient geological grandeur of the cave — its columnar basalt formations steeped in Ossianic myth — with the modern steam-powered vessel, evoking the tension between the sublime forces of nature and the encroachment of the industrial age. Working in his mature Romantic manner, Turner dissolves precise topographical detail into swirling atmospheric light and color, a mode that would come to define his most celebrated seascapes. Exhibited at the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition of 1832, the painting was received with critical acclaim and accompanied in the catalogue by verses from Sir Walter Scott's poem The Lord of the Isles.
