A Lady Writing
Johannes Vermeer
Oil on canvas
National Gallery of Art
A Lady Writing depicts an elegantly attired young woman seated at a table, quill pen in hand, who pauses in her writing to glance directly at the viewer with a composed and subtly engaging expression. She wears a lemon-yellow morning jacket trimmed with ermine and pearl earrings, while a jewellery box, inkwells, and a strand of pearls rest on the draped table before her; on the wall behind her hangs a partially visible vanitas still life. Vermeer, a master of the Dutch Golden Age working in Delft, was celebrated for his extraordinary command of light and his ability to distill the quiet intensity of domestic interior scenes into transcendent, psychologically charged images. This work belongs to his mature period and exemplifies his refined compositional economy, his luminous treatment of diffused natural light, and his nuanced exploration of the human moment suspended in stillness.
