Flatford Lock depicts the working waterway at Flatford on the River Stour in Suffolk, England — a site intimately familiar to Constable, whose father owned Flatford Mill and held commercial interests along the river. Constable rendered the lock's distinctive wooden structure, the reflective water, and the characteristically dynamic English sky with loose, expressive brushwork that captures the transient effects of light and atmosphere. Born in East Bergholt, Suffolk in 1776, Constable devoted much of his career to elevating the English landscape to the highest levels of artistic seriousness, working both in the open air and in his studio to achieve a convincing naturalism. The Flatford Lock subject recurs across multiple works in Constable's oeuvre, serving as both a preparatory study and an independent testament to his deep emotional and artistic attachment to the Stour Valley.
