Corneille Bridge, Rouen
Camille Pissarro
Oil on canvas
Art Gallery of Ontario
This painting belongs to Camille Pissarro's celebrated Rouen series, in which he depicted the bridges and industrial quays along the Seine from hotel windows during his visits to the Norman city in 1896. The Pont Corneille, one of Rouen's historic river crossings, is rendered under characteristically grey, overcast conditions, with the muted palette and atmospheric handling of light that typify Pissarro's late Impressionist style. Pissarro was a Danish-French painter born in 1830 on the island of St. Thomas in the Danish West Indies, and he became a foundational figure of the Impressionist movement — the only artist to exhibit in all eight Paris Impressionist exhibitions. His Rouen urban series reflects his late-career turn toward depicting modern city life, capturing the bustle of commerce, industry, and everyday movement with the empirical, light-sensitive approach that defined Impressionism.
