Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window - Johannes Vermeer (c. 1657–1659)
an Open Window
Oil on canvas
Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden
Painted around 1657–1659, this oil on canvas depicts a young Dutch woman standing in profile before an open window, absorbed in reading a letter, with a bowl of fruit on a draped table in the foreground and a trompe-l'œil curtain at the right. Vermeer, a master of the Dutch Golden Age working in Delft, was renowned for his extraordinary command of light, and this work exemplifies his meticulous attention to the behavior of natural illumination entering a domestic interior. A landmark restoration completed in 2021 by the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden revealed that a large "painting within a painting" depicting Cupid on the rear wall—overpainted by an unknown hand after Vermeer's death—had been concealed for nearly three centuries. Regarded as one of the earliest of Vermeer's interior scenes featuring a solitary figure, the work is considered a foundational example of Dutch genre painting and a pivotal milestone in his artistic development.
