Ascent of the Blessed

Hieronymus Bosch

Oil on oak panel

Museo di Palazzo Grimani

This hauntingly beautiful panel painting depicts naked souls of the blessed being gently escorted by winged angels through billowing clouds and upward into a radiant, segmented tunnel of divine light — one of the most serene and transcendent visions in all of Northern Renaissance art. Part of the four-panel polyptych "Visions of the Hereafter," it stands in luminous contrast to its companion panels showing sinners cast into Hell, together forming a complete medieval theology of reward and punishment. Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1450–1516) was a Dutch master whose intensely symbolic and fantastical imagery was centuries ahead of its time, and this panel is uniquely calm among his works — free of the nightmarish creatures that populate his other paintings, radiating instead a simple, ethereal beauty. Now housed in the Museo di Palazzo Grimani in Venice, this work would bring a profound and mysterious spiritual energy to any space, inviting quiet contemplation of eternity and the soul's journey.
