Church on Fire

Egbert van der Poel

Oil on panel

National Museum in Warsaw

A Gothic village church erupts in flame against a smoke-choked night sky, its pointed windows glowing like embers as the blaze consumes the roof and nave. Below, a chaotic crowd of villagers, soldiers on horseback, and frightened livestock scramble to flee or salvage what they can, rendered in thick, dramatic strokes of ochre and black that flicker with firelight. Egbert van der Poel, a Dutch Golden Age painter from Delft, became obsessed with fire imagery after surviving the catastrophic 1654 Delft gunpowder explosion, and he returned to this theme obsessively throughout his career. This moody, atmospheric nocturne captures both the terror and strange beauty of disaster, making it a striking and conversation-worthy addition to any wall.
