In a Café (L'Absinthe)
Edgar Degas
Oil on canvas
Musée d'Orsay
Known originally as Dans un Café and later as L'Absinthe, this oil on canvas by Edgar Degas depicts a man and a woman seated side by side at a café table, each lost in private desolation—the woman staring vacantly downward before a glass of absinthe, the man gazing blankly to the side with a pipe in hand. Though the scene evokes the spontaneity of a candid snapshot, with its asymmetric, off-centre framing influenced by Japanese printmaking, it was in fact composed deliberately in the studio using posed models. The café depicted is the Nouvelle-Athènes in Place Pigalle, a renowned gathering place for Paris's artistic and bohemian circles. As one of Degas's most celebrated explorations of modern urban life, the painting stands as a landmark of Impressionist-era Realism, fusing acute psychological observation with formal compositional ingenuity.
