Cows in the Pasture - Eugène Verboeckhoven

Eugene Verboeckhoven

Oil on panel

National Museum in Warsaw

A quartet of handsome horned cattle gathers on a grassy rise beneath an enormous, billowing sky, while a young herdsman reclines nearby with his crook, watching over the herd. Verboeckhoven, the leading Belgian animalier painter of the nineteenth century, renders each animal with remarkable anatomical precision and individual character, from the piebald cow turning her head to the resting brown ox. The luminous, cloud-filled atmosphere and low horizon recall the great Dutch landscape tradition, lending the humble pastoral scene a quiet, almost monumental grandeur. This is a warm, pastoral piece that brings the gentle rhythm of countryside life into any room.
