The Mill

Rembrandt van Rijn

Oil on canvas

National Gallery of Art

The Mill depicts a windmill standing prominently on a raised earthen promontory above a broad waterway, set beneath a dramatic, partially stormy sky of blue and steel-gray. Small figures inhabit the scene at the water's edge, lending a sense of human scale to the monumental landscape. Painted in oil on canvas during Rembrandt's mature period, the work exemplifies the Dutch Baroque tradition of tonal landscape painting, in which light, atmosphere, and compositional drama take precedence over topographical exactitude. Now held at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., it remains one of the most celebrated and debated landscape paintings in the Western canon.
