Bal du moulin de la Galette, also known as Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette, is Renoir's monumental 1876 oil on canvas depicting a vibrant Sunday afternoon at the popular open-air dance hall on the Butte Montmartre in Paris. The canvas is animated with couples dancing, patrons socializing at tables, and the dappled play of sunlight filtering through the trees, all rendered with the fluid, broken brushwork characteristic of high Impressionism. Renoir, a leading figure of the French Impressionist movement born in Limoges in 1841, painted the large composition entirely en plein air over the summer months, capturing the transient effects of natural light on moving figures with remarkable spontaneity. First exhibited at the Third Impressionist Exhibition in 1877, the work is widely regarded as one of the defining masterpieces of Impressionism and a landmark in the history of Western painting.
