Ripening Pears
Joseph Decker
Oil on canvas
National Gallery of Art
This captivating still life depicts ripe pears on a branch with remarkable detail, including three wasps digging into partially devoured fruit and leaves with brown spots and holes—a bold, naturalistic approach that was unconventional for its time. German-born American painter Joseph Decker (1853-1924) emigrated to the United States at fourteen and worked his way from sign painter to fine artist, studying at the National Academy of Design and later in Munich. His dense, strikingly realistic fruit compositions challenged Victorian still-life conventions with their unflinching depiction of nature's imperfections, making this work a fascinating example of American Realism that would feel equally at home in a modern farmhouse kitchen or a collector's gallery.
