Peasant Woman, Back View, Sketch
Włodzimierz Tetmajer
Oil on cardboard
National Museum in Warsaw
This vivid oil sketch captures a peasant woman from behind, her crimson skirt and headscarf rendered in thick, confident strokes against a loose field of olive and emerald green. Tetmajer, a leading figure of the Young Poland movement, was deeply inspired by the folk life and costume of the Kraków countryside, often painting the villagers of Bronowice where he settled after marrying a peasant woman himself. The energetic brushwork and warm palette give the work an immediacy and intimacy, as though caught in a fleeting rural moment rather than posed. Its rustic charm and bold color make it a striking, folk-inspired accent for any wall.
