Place du Théâtre Français: Fog Effect

Camille Pissarro

Oil on canvas

Dallas Museum of Art

Painted in December 1897 from his suite at the Hôtel du Louvre in Paris, this intimate oil on canvas depicts the circular Place du Théâtre Français under a shroud of winter fog, with the mass of the Théâtre Français looming at right and the Avenue de l'Opéra dissolving into a lavender haze beyond. The composition belongs to a celebrated series of fifteen Parisian cityscapes Pissarro executed from the same elevated vantage point during the winter of 1897–1898, each capturing the boulevard's shifting atmosphere through loose, atmospheric brushwork characteristic of Impressionism. Pissarro, born in the Danish West Indies and central to the founding of the Impressionist movement in France, rarely painted fog — an effect more closely associated with Monet, Sisley, and Renoir — making this canvas a singular departure within both the series and his broader oeuvre. The painting is part of the Wendy and Emery Reves Collection at the Dallas Museum of Art.
