Saturn Devouring His Son
Francisco Goya
Mixed technique on wall covering transferred to canvas
Museo del Prado
One of the most haunting images in Western art history, this painting depicts the Roman god Saturn with bulging, maddened eyes as he tears into the body of his offspring—a visceral interpretation of the myth where the titan consumed his children to prevent a prophecy of being overthrown. Spanish master Francisco Goya created this work directly on the walls of his home, the Quinta del Sordo (House of the Deaf), as part of his famous "Black Paintings" series during the final, turbulent years of his life when he had become deaf and witnessed the horrors of the Napoleonic Wars. The work's raw emotional intensity, dark palette, and psychological depth make it a proto-Expressionist masterpiece that influenced generations of artists, from the German Expressionists to the Surrealists.
